Respect Your Elders

I would like to dedicate this post to my wonderful sister, Beth. She is the best, and life wouldn't be the same without her.

Romans 3:23New Living Translation (NLT)

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Um hmm! We took another trip into South Africa today. This time Beth was driving. That's Beth "the perfect"...well, almost. Traveling down well paved roads with relatively no traffic and gorgeous views tends to take your mind off the speed limit. Zooming over a hill, we unfortunately encountered a police officer standing at the side of the road, waving our vehicle to the shoulder. He walked over to Beth (the driver this time, thank goodness) and informed her that the speed limit was 80 km per hour. Then he invited her to step out of the vehicle and walk over to the machine that would show her just how fast she was traveling. This seemed like deja vu, only we didn't have any chocolate cupcakes with us this time (see March 4 blog).

Beth told the officer that she believed him about the speeding, and she didn't have to take the long walk of shame for verification. He asked to see her driver's license, looked at it for a moment, and then inquired about her age. The officer took a few steps toward his vehicle before thoughtfully turning around and saying, "My parents always taught me to respect my elders. We appreciate the work your company is doing. I am not going to make you pay a fine."

I don't know what company he thought we worked for, but I LOVED the "elder" part (as long as it was directed at my sister). Gray hairs come in handy, I guess. We just laughed and laughed as we drove away. Uh, driving the speed limit, that is.

And watch out when they are driving!
